Australian company to export coal from Mozambique in 2012
Australian company Riversdale Mining plans to begin extracting coking coal from its mines at Benga, in the northern Mozambican province of Tete, in November. However, due to ongoing work on the port terminal at Beira, in the Sofala province of central Mozambique, it is unlikely that the company will be able to export until the first months of 2012.
The mining group’s initial annual production at Benga is expected to reach two million tons, comprising 1.7 million tons of coking coal, a key component in steel production, and 0.3 million of thermal coal, generally used in power generation. The company envisages that coal production would increase to ten million tons in 2013.
With markets booming in China and India, analysts predict that Riversdale may eventually supply up to ten per cent of the global market. The Sydney-based resource company was set up in 2004 by a group of coal mining professionals interested in exploration, mining and development projects.
