Maputo's publicly-owned bus company Transportes Públicos de Maputo (TPM) has ordered 150 buses that run on compressed natural gas, a resource readily available in Mozambique. A third of the buses have already arrived on the city’s streets with the remainder to come over the summer.
The buses were purchased under a credit system financed by the state’s Transport and Communications Fund (FTC) and come from Indian firm Tata, the world's second-largest bus manuafacturer, based in Mumbai. In addition to hiring 600 new drivers and fare collectors, TPM has sent engineers and mechanics to India for maintenance training.
The new buses will operate on routes currently under-served by public transport such as the suburbs of Boane and Marracuene, and between Maputo and the neighbouring city of Matola.
