The Mozambique government is considering establishing the country’s first over-ground light railway and tram network which would link Maputo, Matola 12km west of the capital and the district of Marracuene 30km north.
The feasibility study was presented by SALCEF, Italy’s main railway construction company for 60 years. It outlines the construction and operation of a network of metros and trams, and an integrated transport system which provides for buses and car parks located near metro and tram stations.
The project, costed at $955 million, could begin towards the end of 2013 with a completion date in 2026. The first phase comprises the metro and tram network linking the three municipal areas and could be operational by 2016.
It is believed that if chosen, SALCEF would pay the $40 million necessary to begin the first stage of installing the electric network for the metro and tram lines. The source of the rest of the funding needed for the ambitious project is not yet clear.
