The All Africa Games in Maputo were closed by Mozambican president Armando Guebuza on 18 September with South Africa as the top medal-winning country with 151 medals.
Nigeria, which fielded the largest number of athletes at 359, came third highest out of the 48 participating countries, after Egypt edged past Nigeria with just one more gold medal.
At the choreographed closing ceremony in Maputo’s Zimpeto National Stadium, spectators watched traditional African song and dance by dancing warriors.
Although largely seen as a success in Mozambique, many of the events experienced low turnouts, and even at the closing ceremony the 42,000-seater stadium was only filled to two-thirds capacity.
An estimated 5,000 athletes took part in 23 different sports over the two-week multi-sport event, the largest of its kind in Africa.
