Anti-piracy agreement between South Africa and Mozambique

An anti-piracy agreement has been reached between South Africa and Mozambique, to be extended eventually to include Tanzania. The agreement was signed at the third South African-Mozambican Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security Session in Pretoria on 8 November.

With the largest coastline in Africa after Somalia, Mozambique lacks sufficient resources to police its 2,470 km coast on its own. The South African navy has been helping to patrol the waters off northern Mozambique since January 2011, with notable success near Pemba, the country’s northern-most city. The use of joint naval and air patrols over the last year has resulted in a significant reduction in pirate attacks.

The growing prevalence of piracy along the east African coast in recent years has meant that it has beenincreasingly difficult for a single country to combat the Somali pirates without a coordinated approach involving other countries.
