10 June-15 July 2010. Revisitar Ricardo Rangel pays tribute to the late photographer Ricardo Rangel, one of the most important figures on the social, cultural and political scene in Mozambique in the last half century. The exhibition presents 22 of his best-known and most representative images.
Born in Lourenço Marques (present-day Maputo) in 1924, Rangel is widely considered the most important photographer in Mozambique. Of mixed African, Asian and European descent, he became the first non-white photographer to get a job with for the Notícias da tarde newspaper in 1952 before going on to work for all the main newspapers in the country. In 1983 he established the prestigious Centro de Formaçao Fotográfica in Maputo, of which he remained the director until his death in 2009 at the age of 85.
