16 July-12 Aug 2010. Photographs and an installation by Mozambican artist Camila de Sousa shed light on the mythical neighbourhood of Mafalala, one of the oldest informal settlements in Maputo.
Built on the edge of what used to be the white neighbourhood under Portuguese colonial rule, Mafalala was once home to the former Mozambican presidents Samora Machel and Joaquim Chissano, the poet Jose Craveirinho and the footballer Eusebio. It is characterised by brightly coloured houses made from sheets of zinc and wooden frames as brick buildings were largely forbidden.
