from 12.10 to 14.10.2010Cycle of Conferences on Water at CCFM 14 October, 11 November, 14 December 2010. CCFM in collaboration with the French embassy in Maputo proposes a cycle of conferences, debates and film projections on the subject “Water and Man in Africa”. Various organizations, which deal with climate change, and similar topics estimate that by 2050 over 200 million people will migrate from the southern hemisphere, and especially from Africa, due to a water shortages, which will cause reduced agricultural productivity and food shortages. Many of Africa’s major rivers, such as the Niger, are under threat. A study by Maarten de Wit and Jacek Stankiewicz conducted at the University of Cape Town reveals that north-western and southern Africa, Botswana and South Africa in particular, would be the areas most affected by water scarcity.
